When I write online dating profiles my goal is to create opportunities for engaging conversation starting.

Curiosity is at the core of relationships. Conversations fall flat if there’s no curiosity.

Therefore, when I choose prompts for any dating app, I keep this goal in mind.

In the below examples you’ll see prompt ideas as well as ideas for conversation starting.

My Favorite Dil Mil Prompts

Something I Get Way Too Excited About
I Nerd Out On

These two have an essence that’s similar.

I like them because you drive at your passions, interests and whatever lights you up. For ideas, think of subjects you love to learn about, simple pleasures that bring you joy or a daily habit – maybe quirky, to name a few.

I Nerd Out On
My to do list. I love setting goals for myself and checking off my accomplishments.

I’m more a fly by the seat of my pants kind of person.

What are some of your most favorite accomplishments?

Are you a digital or pen/paper list writer? I happen to have a respectable pen collection.

***

Poring through cookbooks and creating delectable 5-course meals.

What’s the most fabulous thing you’ve ever cooked?

What kitchen utensil do you wish you had?

What’s your favorite vegetable to cook with?

***

Something I Get Way Too Excited About
Learning about planets and the vastness of space. I’ve only just begun scratching the surface.

I’ve been digging dinosaurs lately. Amazes me how big animals used to be on earth.

As a kid, I played Where In Space Is Carmen Sandiego. I used to know the names of Jupiter’s moons.

What’s your favorite space fun fact?

***

The stories I hear from people along the way. I’m a social creature and I enjoy learning about the world from new and different perspectives.

What’s your funniest travel story?

What’s the most interesting story you’ve heard?

Where did you go on your first overseas excursion?

The Motto I Live By

This is a great one which expresses values, and sharing a value or two in your online dating profile is essential. Quotes, song lyrics or best advice are ideas that work for this prompt.

“Knowing is half the battle.” Big G.I Joe fan growing up.

For me it was the transformers. I related real well to the Bumble Bee. Are you fond of a particular Joe?

Tell me more about G.I Joe.

Do you still watch cartoons?

***

“If You Always Do What You’ve Always Done Then You Will Always Get What You’ve Always Gotten”

Tell me more about your thoughts about your quote.

Sounds like you are the kind of person who isn’t afraid to take some risks.

What’s something you changed that paid off in a big way?

After Work You Can Find Me

This one is about what you do when the world is your oyster. Use this one to talk about your hobbies and what you spend your time doing.

Training for my next marathon, hosting epic pizza parties and this winter, I’ll be learning to ski.

Wow you certainly keep yourself busy! I run, but I keep it easy. Mostly I hike the trails.

I’ve never skied before, either! I’m short, so I think my low center of gravity will work in my favor.

How’s your pizza dough? I’ve been trying for years for perfection.

***

I like to be outside as much as I can. Golf is one of my favorite ways to be active, social and enjoy fresh air. I also enjoy hiking.

I don’t golf, but I’ll caddy for you. I’m a good golf cart girl.

How do you feel about hiking in the rain?

***

Getting in a good workout. relaxing with a book, tinkering with a project at home or volunteering. I like to pay my kindness forward.

What’s the most recent book you had a hard time putting down?

What project do you have cooking these days? Do you fix toasters?

What kind of volunteer work do you do?

What I’m Looking For In My Jalebi Baby

This one might not be geared toward conversation starting the same way the others are, but it captures attention.

This one is about what’s important to your heart and demonstrates standards. Don’t be afraid to be bold.

I’m personally curious about people who have standards and I’d want to know how they describe/perceive their standards. Ultimately resulting in how they relate to mine.

I’d like to meet a woman who is fun-loving, down-to-earth and has a positive outlook on life; a woman who follows traditional values and appreciates ventures off the beaten path.

OR

I’m looking for a man who is grounded and true to himself and his convictions; a man who is warm-natured and has a playful spirit.

How do you describe integrity

What traditional values are most important to you?

It sounds like you are very confident in who you are and what you are looking for.

The Prompts I Don’t Like

The prompts I’m not fond of are ones which (more or less) sound like prerequisites or they put people in a box. In some cases, there are cute ways to work around it, but with other good options you might as well not fall into the trap.

Swipe Right If

I’ll Treat You Like Biryani Instead Of Plain Rice If

I don’t like the word IF at the end of these prompts. The prompts might as well say: You’re worthy of my love IF….

Prompts like these are in poor taste in a world where people are supposed to be open, flexible and curious-minded.

Everyone has their deal breakers, but there are better ways to present them.

Even if someone meets your prerequisites, they might still be turned off by the simple fact that you sound rigid and demanding.

Pro Tip For Conversation Starters

Ask questions out of genuine curiosity. If you’re not curious, don’t pretend you are.

Ask open-ended questions instead of Yes or No questions. Start your sentences with: Tell me more about; It sounds like; I’d love to hear more about; I get the impression…..
